About

Dakaya Lenz, is a visual artist and yoga teacher based in Suriname. In 2012 she graduated from the Nola Hatterman Art Academy.  She has exhibited her work in art exhibitions such as: Art Boost 2013, Moengo Festival of Visual Arts 2015, Spontanelus 2016, the ‘Surinaher Art Expo 2017’, in Georgetown, Guyana. Artist in Residence 2020 (solo), Udu baki 2022 and the National Art Fair of Surinaher of 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020 and 2022.

Colors and shapes from nature in particular inspire her. A harmonious play between these two, inside tight demarcated surfaces, often with strongly defined lines predominates in her earlier work. She incorporates personal experiences into her art and add a symbolism of her own creating figurative, abstract and semi-abstract works. To expand her comfort zone, she also produces work in a different style since 2020, in which the composition is more of a co-creator, where the colors meet and overlap freely. In terms of themes and technique, her work is multifaceted. She keeps challenging herself by trying new things. On her canvas, she captures what touches her, intrigues her, what she feels or how she imagines things to be. This can range from the powerful beauty of a flower or part of it, an inspiring musical performance, situations, processes, themes or poignant moments in life such as making a new beginning or the passing of a loved one. Her work is for anyone who feels to engage with it and needs to be touched by it.
