Motivated by the unique Surinamese concept of Alakondre, Reinier Asmoredjo created this work to portray the mixture of various cultures, as he describes it “poured into one entity!” Wan brudu symbolizes the process on the way to that new entity. Children who are born to parents from different ethnic groups, thus creating our beautiful mixed and diverse Surinamese community and what we ultimately all strive to be: one people! The red U-shaped link in the composition represents blood and connects the two women with each other, clearly indicating that they are Wan brudu (one blood).’
